Dog Lovers

Standard

Have you ever gone to a “doggie beach”?!  You know, where dogs are allowed to roam free and romp and play in the sand and water?

It’s a real hoot!!

There are big dogs, little dogs, passive dogs, aggressive dogs, friendly dogs, playful dogs, mischievous dogs, young dogs, and old dogs.  All kinds of dogs…all shapes and sizes.  It’s a haven for dogs and “dog lovers.”  You have to be a dog lover to go there, because as soon as you get on the beach the other dogs sniff you out, and the new canine you brought to the scene.  They attack you, your stuff, your dog, and your gear.  Don’t bring any food…they can smell it a mile away!

The most fun part is that all the “Dog Lovers” are so welcoming…they’re just as friendly as their dogs.  They come over, introduce themselves, welcome you to the beach, and ask all about you and your dog.  There’s lots of:   “OOH, AHH,” and “How Cute!!”  They give you pointers and helpful tips to make your trip “a day at the beach”.  They’re like one big happy family…  “The Family of Dog-Lovers.”  There’s instant rapport.  You feel like you’ve known these folks forever.

My husband and I traveled to the doggie beach in Venice, Florida soon after we got our black and white Siberian Husky puppy, Onyx.  She was about 3 months old and probably weighed about 10 pounds at the time (one of the tiniest dogs on the beach) and most likely the only puppy!  We had to keep her on her leash because Siberians will bolt, the beach was long, we’re old, and we didn’t want to have to run her down when she decided it was more fun to run away with a Great Dane!  She has no fear of other dogs no matter what their size and stood up to all of them, even the Rottweiler.  Also, the beach was lined with overgrowth, and the walkways that connected the fenced in areas from the beach were not enclosed.  Signs everywhere read, “Beware of Alligators.”

The trip from the parking lot to the beach was the longest trek I’ve ever had to make to get to water.  Honestly, what are they thinking?  Let’s see, we had a beach umbrella, a beach bag, a beach blanket, a bogey board, a noodle, a cooler, a bag with puppy toys, and a puppy on a leash flailing, jumping, pulling, twisting, jerking, and trying desperately to get away from us.  All this while we’re trying to get through a series of gated enclosures.

From the car there’s a great big gate to open with all this stuff in our hands, and the dog.   Then, another great big gate to shut real quickly, so the dogs won’t get out.   We’re now in a huge playground area with twenty, or so, dogs playing and running free, and begging our puppy to join in.

After we get to another great big gate at the other end of the huge playground, I’m about ready to faint.  My right arm is now several inches longer than my left, which is numb from the weight of all my gear.  I still need to get through another great big gate real quick to keep the dogs from getting out this end, so I can be home free!  Now, I’m at the walkways with the “Beware of Alligators” signs, and my husband has forgotten something and is returning to the car.  Oh my, I’m all alone and ready to faint.   I gathered all my strength and trudged on, trying not to drop anything, or God forbid, let go of the dog’s leash.

Finally, I was at the beach.  When my husband arrived, he was hyperventilating, too!

Ahhh…we though, we’re finally, at the beach.  Welcoming, relaxing, inviting, calming.

Are you kidding?!  Once the other dogs saw us, sand was flying, and we were covered in it until we got home and finally showered it off!!  I’ve never had that much sand on every inch of my body before.

Onyx loved the Gulf water and the waves.  We held her on the bogey board, and let her “surf” the waves.  When she was all tired out, she started whimpering to get out, and then she had to contend with the dogs on the beach again, constantly chasing her.  Onyx and I got hungry, so I had to “sneak” food under the umbrella, so the bloodhounds wouldn’t know.  Not easy.  All this fun was exhausting for all of us!!

I was marveling at how wonderful it was that the other “Dog Lovers” could let their dogs run free to play with such abandon, until the giant Rottweiler suddenly saw a jet skier race by through the waves.  He suddenly split.  He charged down the beach so fast trying to out run the machine that his owner, who really was not having a relaxing day anyway, had to sprint off after him.  Some twenty minutes later, she came back, panting hard, with a leashed Big Boy tugging to get free.  So much for doggie freedom!

Church, are we a family of “Jesus Lovers?”

Do we realize how much baggage people are carrying when they’re really just looking for some real freedom from it all?

Do we realize what people have to go through in this world to get through every gate on their own..without God to carry them?

Do we make their trek to Jesus longer than it needs to be, ’til they’re about ready to faint?

Do they even want to keep trying to get to the water?

Do we really welcome them…sniff them out!!  Get excited to see them and help them reach the water…the Living Water of Jesus?

Can we teach them how to “surf” the waves of joy Jesus brings?

Or, do they see a lot of “Beware Of The Christians” signs blocking their way, putting obstacles in their paths?

Are we treating them like part of our big happy family…”The Family Of Jesus Lovers?”

Do they see our Jesus as:  Welcoming.  Relaxing.  Inviting.  Calming.

Do we show them how to, “Run.  Play.  Get free from the world.”

Yes, it can be exhausting.  Yes, they’re covered in sand and it will get all over you, too!

But you have the food for the hungry…don’t sneak to eat it…give it away…welcome them to Jesus…where there is so much freedom!

Yes, Freedom!!  Go!!   Charge down the beach…the water’s just ahead!

How To Raise A Godly Child?

Standard

“Train up a child in the way he should go:  and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”  Proverbs 22:6  KJV

“Teach your children right from wrong, and when they are grown they will still do right.”  Proverbs 22:6  CEV

When God gives you a child, it’s a gift and a blessing…and it’s your job to teach and train your child.  Teaching and training a child is hard work.  Have you ever been taught something?  Have you ever been trained in a special skill?  How about the first time you tried to learn how to use the computer?!  Whew!!  It takes time…it takes practice.

What’s the key to raising a Godly child?  Ask God, our Creator, for instructions.  Ask God for His plan for this particular child.  For most people, having a child when they want to, is easy.  It wasn’t for my husband and I…it took lots of time and effort.  But really, the most difficult, time-consuming part is after the child arrives..the training part.  It means the child isn’t raising himself.  It takes giving him/her back to God, so people can see the beautiful child God gave you to raise for Him.  Pray ahead of time, so you anticipate “prevention of problems,” rather than “crisis control.”   Train him to give his heart and life to the Lord, not his habits to the enemy.

Dedicate this child to the Lord.  This child, God’s gift to you, needs to be given back to Him.  When you do, He returns the child to you, and then gives you the wisdom to raise him to love the Lord, praise Him, and serve Him.  Amen!

Since we had to put such great effort into having our son, my family prayed.  And I attribute this constant, continuous prayer year after year, for the precious gift of this Godly child.  I don’t attribute it to myself, or what we did to deserve it.

As your child grows, always look to see God’s plan in your child’s life.  Expand your child’s horizons and aspirations, with what God begins to show you about this child.  Be sensitive to God’s leading.  Every child’s God-given gifts and talents are different and unique.   But kids are not normally confident in their abilities.  Point your child’s talents out to him early in life.  Let him know you love him and you’re proud of his successes.  Use God’s manual-His Holy Word, to gather wisdom.  Read the Bible, let it change your life, and put its teachings into practice to help change your child’s life in amazing ways.  Pray that your child will stay close to God.  Pray the verse in Proverbs:  That your child will be “trained in the way he should go, AND that he will not depart from it.”  This is your unique opportunity to disciple someone to live close to the Lord.  You can’t raise your spouse, your parents, your siblings, or your friends.   It’s your job from God to raise your child…to help him develop a tender heart for the Lord.  To be pliable and on fire for God.  You can’t live his life, but you can help him live his life for the Lord.

Be determined that this child will not grow up without faith in God:  How?

1.  Introduce him to Jesus immediately.  Prepare your heart and home before the baby’s born.  Everything you do and say should point that child to Jesus.  Storybooks, music, nature, relationships, good habits, etc.

2.  Let Jesus draw him and give him a tender heart towards the things of God.  Pray that the Lord will guide his paths.  Keep your mind, and your child’s mind, on spiritual things.

3.  Teach him that to be saved is to serve…and lead by example.  Look at it as if you’re being raised together in the Lord.  Encourage your spouse to develop wholesome hobbies with your child.  Utilize grandparents to look for the best in him.  You can never have enough people who love your child. There could never be too many people praying for your child to be all he’s meant to be in the Lord.

4.  Love your child the way Christ loves us.  Let others love their children this way, too!  You should love your child with all your heart..and they should love their child that way, too.  They don’t need to feel the same way you do about your child, they should feel strongly about their child!  But, pray for other people’s children, also.  Mentor others.  Allow Godly mentors to enter your child’s life.  Encourage your child’s interests, and help them find ways for those interests to glorify God.  Know their friends.  Invite your child to bring Jesus with you wherever you go.

5.  Establish a strong spiritual background surrounding your child through family, friends, church, etc.  Establish wholesome, Godly habits and practices.  Encourage spiritual awareness.  Read the Bible with your children…make sure they understand the passages they’re reading, not just memorizing it.

6.  Teach them to pray, and give them lots of opportunities to do it.  And when they’re ready, encourage Water Baptism and Baptism in the Holy Spirit.  Guide them into activities offered at your Bible-believing church and encourage outreach into your community.  Sunday School, Kids Church, Youth Groups, Christian Camps, Bible Quiz Groups, Kids Quest Programs, Church Plays, and Christian Music are ways to immerse your child in God’s Plan for his life, and to eliminate the enemy’s plan to hold your child back and destroy him.

7.  Pray, fast, and anoint with oil.  Ask for the Lord’s guidance, blessings, direction, compassion, mercy, etc.  Cry out, plead the blood, ask for Jesus’ blood to cover your child, ask for a hedge of protection around him.  Let your child see you praying for his healing before he hears you calling the Dr., and asking for medicine.

8.  Volunteer your child in the work of the Lord.  Give your child a gentle push in God’s direction with lots of praise, lots of encouragement, and lots of faith in the goodness of God to use him in His Kingdom.  Establish a habit of service.

9.  See your child as a leader in God’s Kingdom…always looking for the talents and gifts that God gave him to use in the Body of Christ.  Remember your child needs to be filled with the Holy Spirit to be filled to overflowing.  To lead, instead of following every whim of society.  Especially at school.

What are some practical applications?

1.  Never say “NO!” when you can say “YES!”   Never say “YES!” when you should say “NO!”  Never say “MAYBE!” when you mean “NO!”   Be consistent, be assertive…you’re the parent.  It’s your job to raise the child.  Anticipate the issues.  Pray about them ahead of time.  Remember “prevention,” not “crisis control,” whenever possible.      Discuss with your child your views on drugs, drinking, smoking, dating, etc. while they’re young, before it’s an issue.  Make your “NO!” absolute, set boundaries, talk about limits, curfews, etc.

1.  Never seem shocked at what they want to talk about…be matter-of-fact.  Be positive.  Always, under all circumstances encourage your child to come to you and discuss anything.  If they can’t discuss everything with you, even something embarrassing, they’ll go somewhere else for advice.  You should be the one who determines if the issue needs another’s input.  You’re the adult in charge of this child.  God gave him to you.  Care for your special gift.  It takes God’s special wisdom and love.

2.  Offer easy choices along the way with few consequences, so your child can gain confidence in making good choices and right decisions.  Start asking him at a young age:  “Do you want to play with the ball or with your teddy bear?”  “Do you want the red shirt or the blue shirt?”  “Do you want vanilla or chocolate ice cream for dessert?”  If, on the other hand, the choice is yours, don’t give the child a choice.  For instance, “Please brush your teeth now!”  Not, “Would you like to brush your teeth?”  Pray for wisdom between the two!  When your child cooperates, thank him, to encourage cooperation the next time.

3.  Make everything you want your child to do seem like a good idea to him.  For instance:  “Tomorrow is Sunday.  On Sundays, we get to go to God’s house to sing and worship Him and you’ll be playing and learning about some awesome Bible adventures!  I can’t wait!”  Instead of, “Tomorrow’s church and I want you up early, so we won’t be late!”  Positive presentation is everything!  It increases the likelihood of cooperation, agreement, and acceptance of our plans.

4.  Don’t argue with a child.  Be the adult.  Think ahead…ask God for wisdom.   Choose the wisdom God gives you, and stick with it.  Do not allow whining.  Carrying-on by your child should not change your decision, if it’s a good one.  If it’s a difficult choice, tell your child you’ll pray about it, discuss it with your spouse, and get back to him.  Don’t be pressured by the wants of a child.  They can take “NO!” for an answer.  They can also understand, “Wait!”   Say, “I can’t help you right now, but I can help you in 10 minutes.”  This is a good answer to stop constant badgering, nagging, and interrupting.

5.  Discipline should be appropriate to the age of the child and should start as early as possible.  A forceful “NO!” and removing the child from the danger may stop a baby or toddler from touching something hot.  Removing a fragile object will prevent breakage, and substituting another object for the fragile one may change the child’s destructive focus.  Giving time-out is effective (but, not in his room with toys and TV!).  We used “the bottom of the stairs” with nothing to stare at, but the wall.  It produced a change in attitude pretty quickly!  Taking away privileges (we used “The 3 T’s”–TV, Toys, and Treats), works well, even in the most stubborn years!  It encourages an older child to think about his actions and to decide to follow the rules.  Explain that the child always has the choice to behave and do right, or to disobey, but that disobedience has certain consequences.  Then, explain the specific consequences.  God does the same for us…He always gives us a choice, and also explains the consequences of disobedience in His Word. Many children will only obey when they are clear on what the consequences of misbehavior are.

6.  Encourage the behavior you like and want to continue.  If your child offers you a cookie and you don’t want it at this time, say “No thank you, but thank you for asking!”  It encourages kind behavior rather than, “No, you know I don’t like those cookies!”  Believe me, after a few times of hearing that comment, and other negative feedback, what child will keep offering to share things with anyone?

Teaching and training…it’s not magic.  It’s only possible to raise a Godly child with the power of God.  Pray!  Because, “God is good, all the time.  And all the time, God is good!!”  Instill in them God’s confidence and the love of helping others.  Teach them He can be trusted in every situation in life.  Show your love of God and display your awesome reverence of God.   Don’t teach him to be fearful of a cruel, punishing God.  Telling a child, “God’s going to punish you!” without speaking about the love and mercy of God will make a child want to run and hide his sinful wrongdoings, instead of simply asking forgiveness from a loving, merciful Creator.  A loving God embraces our weaknesses, hurts, failures, and mistakes.  He forgives us, when we ask, and takes us back.  Train them to see this God.

Pray with them.  Ask for their prayer requests.  Children’s prayers are powerful…children are innocent and bring so little baggage in with their faith.  They still believe, “For with God all things are possible.”  Mark 10:27  KJV   Let Jesus look inside their hearts for faith to believe Him for their miracle.  And with faith, their prayers will be answered.  Encourage prayer, acknowledge answers, and praise God.  Give Jesus all the credit.

Teach your child that being a Christian is fun!  Don’t make it a hard thing, or drudgery.  Are YOU having fun?  Get more involved yourself.  Your love of Christ and service to His Kingdom is contagious.  Let your child catch it from you.  Shine Jesus’ light all around you to your family, friends, neighbors, acquaintances, and in the Body of Christ.  Your child will bask in the glow, and grow in the Lord to be all he should be according to God’s perfect plan for his life.

Raising a child who loves the Lord is the best gift you can give yourself, and it makes for a healthy, happy child (you can’t pray for anything better than that!).  And God’s Kingdom will profit from your efforts.  Your child should know your best friend-Jesus.

Disciple your child.  It won’t always be easy.  He may have your disposition, but maybe not.  He may be easy to mold, maybe not.  He may be defiant, argumentative, disobedient, and whiny.  Discipline, lead, guide, teach, and train as young as possible.  “NO!” if necessary.  Divert attention, if possible.  “Let’s play this!” instead of with something dangerous.  It’s the same when they get older; guide them towards Godly activities instead of worldly ones.  Never dwell on what they can’t do or are not allowed to do, but be enthusiastic about what they can do and will be allowed to do.  Allow your child to find a place to lead.  We need more young Christian leaders, children of faith with strong convictions that are not swayed by society.

Years ago, I had a vision:  My cousin’s daughter had just had her first child.  God showed me He would need the children of her age in His Kingdom in the end times, and He would raise them up for His glory.  That child is now 13 years old.  This is the end-time generation the Lord will use.  It’s your job, with God’s help, to instill those Godly qualities in your child that He can use in His Plan for His Kingdom.  Since it’s His Plan…we need to follow it!  Teach perseverance, endurance, achievement, excellence, and accomplishment for the things of God.

Raise up children of integrity in all situations…when you’re watching them, but also when you’re not nearby.  People notice.  Encourage your child to respect authority, but not to be intimidated by adults…for their safety, they must have a healthy questioning and discernment, too!  Train them to speak up and speak out against something that doesn’t feel right.

What’s my advice to those of you who are leaders of our children and youth…in churches, schools, sports, and clubs?  Train, teach, and disciple.  Enjoy their energy and channel it towards service to the Lord.  Build upon what their parents have already done.  Reinforce the training they’ve received at home.  Parents are giving you their best offering.  Their child, their gift from God!  What a treasure!  What an awesome responsibility for you!

But, what if parents haven’t done their jobs, and children come to you untrained and even unteachable…not ready to learn and not tenderhearted to the Lord.  Then, it’s your job to be aware that these children are raising themselves.  They’re undisciplined, and perhaps unloved or neglected.  So God in His ultimate wisdom has raised you up with His anointing for such a time as this.  Step up to the plate, in the place where He has planted you, to touch the children around you.  Even the unlovable.  Especially the unlovable!

Sometimes after an evening of teaching in kid’s club, I ask God, “Why can’t you give me only good little church kids to teach?”  And on other, even more difficult evenings, I ask God, “Why can’t even ‘the good little church kids’ be good?”  Some days or nights you’ll go home tired and frustrated, too.  You’ll want to give-up.  You’ll wonder, “What’s the use?”  It’s hard work.  Truly rewarding work, with awesome eternal value, but definitely not for the faint-hearted.  Be patient, persevere, pray (a lot!), fast, and ask God for direction.  He’ll help you with creative discipline for each individual child and each unique situation.  These are your children…God gave them to you in this ministry, at this time.  It’s an awesome job to help raise a Godly child.

What are your qualifications to help them?  You’re only qualified through the love and wisdom of God.  Seek it out!  And then, spread the “Good News” around.  Because, only God can raise a Godly child.

What’s Up With Those Kids?

Standard

What’s YOUR passion?  What makes you feel complete, satisfied, and fills you with joy?  God wants us to discover and pursue our own passion in His Kingdom.  The unique passion He’s given us.  Our passion will not be exactly the same as anyone else’s.  That’s what makes it so special and worth pursuing!  If you do find someone with a similar passion from God, enthusiastically get on the bandwagon by praying about your similar passionate pursuits for the Kingdom of God!!

As a teacher, my passion is teaching kids!  Big kids, little kids, my kid, your kids, a stranger’s kids, anyone’s kids!!  Doesn’t matter to me.  I can find something worth nurturing in any of them.

So let me speak about kids!  So I can speak from my heart.

I believe broken adults are just hurting kids who haven’t found the One who can fix them!!  So I ask you, why should we wait until the hurting kids become broken adults…why not encourage kids to know the One who can fix them as soon as possible?  Why not raise kids that can stand in the winds and storms of life?  Kids that can bend, but not break.  After going through Hurricane Charley in FL, I love what Proverbs 11:28 says,”…the righteous flourish like the palm tree.”  My palm trees are still standing after the storm, how about yours?  Right?

Let’s face it, kids can just stand there…and look so cute!  Right?  But, I don’t believe kids “should be seen and not heard.”  I believe if they have something to offer to the Kingdom of God, they should be heard.  If the confidence they receive in Christ is evident, they should be encouraged to speak up and speak out.  We should be looking for God-given gifts and talents in them.  Encouraging and inspiring them to use those gifts in the church.  We should  give them opportunities to rise up and lead in areas where the Holy Spirit has gifted them.

I haven’t been as excited about a ministry in my life, as I am about the kids/teens I work with in the Drama Ministry my & I direct at church!!  The Lord blesses me through their dedication, and their love of Christ.  God uses those kids to speak volumes for His Kingdom, and I’m just sitting back, and lovin’ it.  Okay, really my son and I are working really hard, but that’s beside the point!!  We see the results as we outreach into our community through praying behind the scenes, not just by me, but also thankfully by the kids themselves.

What you’re seeing is the foundation that their parents, church members, pastors  Sunday school teachers, etc., have built on year after year, and the impact that’s been made in their lives.  The Holy Spirit controls our direction, which is the only way it can be done.  If God’s not in it, we can’t do anything, and the kids know this.  Our prayer is to do our best for the Lord in this ministry, but more importantly, the kids pray that any message we act out in a drama, will change hearts for the Lord.

What did God give me to lead this ministry?

First, He gave me my son.  Here’s where I’m talking to you about being your children’s advocate…joining in, and enjoying them.  I love what my kid loves.  Love me, love my kid!  When he started loving snakes, I started loving snakes.  The Drama Team ministry started with the songs he loved, and I learned to love, and the acting out of the songs came, because he loves drama.  God literally chooses a song and gives my son and I and the other members the vision for acting out the song.  We can see the whole thing acted out in our minds.  We’ll all get together, listen to the music over and over, talk about it, brainstorm, tweak it, and practice ’til it’s perfect.  It’s a beautiful thing!!

Second, He gave me the confidence needed to be a leader.  At a conference, I heard the Lord ask, “Are you ready?”  I had been praying for some time to be a leader for the Lord, and I was thinking of a writing or speaking ministry, two other things I love to do.  So when I said, “Yes, I’m ready Lord!”  I felt His confidence and His anointing set in like never before.  “I need for you to step out and be a leader for Me,” He said.  For what, I didn’t know yet, at this point.  That’s why I’m encouraging you to step out in faith, too!!

Third, He gave me a vision.  At a meeting, after my son’s songs and dramas had been playing and playing in my mind, the sermon message was, “The sound from God you hear in your heart will come to pass within a year!”  Wow!  What a powerful message!  I didn’t care if anyone else heard the same sound in their heart that I did, because I heard it as clear as a bell:  “Our kids can do this,” I thought.  “I can ‘see’ it, they can minister by acting out these songs and messages for hurting people…for those who are broken and need to find the One who can fix them.  Our kids can be a mighty force in the Kingdom of God.”

Notice, I didn’t tell you that God gave me the gift of music for this ministry.  I have no musical background.  He didn’t give me any background in drama or dance, either.  What He gave me was my son, confidence to lead in the Holy Spirit, the ministry vision from the Lord, and my 26-year public school teaching career based on encouraging children.  It seemed to be enough of a resume for the Lord!!  Amen!!

When our children’s pastor mentioned that she had been praying about ministries that could be used in Children’s Church, that’s the resume I gave her!!  And off we went!

Who was the first person to believe in you?  Think about that.  (In my case, it was my Aunt Margaret.  My Uncle Angelo was my Pastor, and she was my Sunday school teacher.)  Can you see the power of that influence of someone believing in you?  God puts certain children in our care, or in our charge, so we can believe in them!

I was shy as a child and afraid of people outside my church.  How can you witness like that?  The reason my son’s not shy, is that I told him being shy is a waste of time, very self-centered, especially when it comes to spiritual things.  Be bold!  We have something valuable to say!  Be a person who believes in and encourages a child early in their life.  Don’t let hurts set in, it only leads to broken adults, and broken adults lead very broken lives.  There’s no need for that since we know the One who can fix them.

If we look briefly at some children from the Bible, we can see how they started out:

Moses  (Exodus 2:2) KJV  “His mother saw ‘that he was a goodly child.’”   CEV-says, “beautiful.”

(Exodus 2:6) KJV  “The daughter of Pharaoh had ‘compassion’ on him because he was crying.”  CEV-says, “she felt ‘sorry’ for him.”

(Exodus 2:11) KJV  “When Moses was grown, he went out to his brethren, and looked on their burdens.”   CEV-says, “Moses went out to where his own people were hard at work.”

Is there a correlation between what Moses’ natural mother thought about him, how his adopted mother felt about him, and the character of the grownup Moses?  Yes!

Let’s talk about this!  My son looked like an “alien” when he was born. Really!  He was a 3 lbs. 4 oz. preemie, so tiny!  But, because of all we went through to have him, I thought he was the most beautiful baby I’d ever seen in my whole life.  My husband did, too!  Everyone should feel this way about a child God has given them.

Joseph (Genesis 37:3) KJV  “Israel loved Joseph more than all his children…” CEV-says, “Jacob loved Joseph more than he did any of his other sons…”

(Genesis 37:10)   KJV  “…his Father rebuked him.”   CEV says, “…his father became angry with him…”

Can you love a child and still rebuke him and be angry with him?  Yes!

Let’s talk about this!  My son’s “terrible-two-temper-tantrums” were horrendous from the age of two and a half to around 3 years old, I battled his sometimes 45 minute temper tantrums, perhaps 2-3 times a day.  I found out that I was more stubborn than he was.  Amen!!  And, I love and adore him!!

Samuel (I Samuel 1:10) KJV  Hannah was “in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the Lord, and wept sore.”  CEV says, “Hannah was brokenhearted and was crying as she prayed.”

(I Samuel 3:1,4)   KJV  “And the child Samuel ministered unto the Lord…that the Lord called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I.”   CEV says, “Samuel served the Lord…and the Lord called out his name and he answered, ‘Here I am’!”

Can the child you fervently prayed for, answer the call to serve the Almighty God?  Yes!

Let’s talk about this!  I prayed so long for my son, first my way, then God’s way.  Originally told God I only wanted a girl, but God was not in the mood to do things my way!  My precious son was immersed in so much prayer in the 10 years it took us to have him, I knew he was a gift from the Lord and that he would be used by the Lord, and used mightily!!

Esther (Esther 2:7) JKV  Mordecai “brought up Hadassah, that is Esther, his uncle’s daughter: for she had neither father or mother, and the maid was fair and beautiful; whom Mordecai, when her father and mother were dead, took for his own daughter.”   CEV says, “Mordecai had a very beautiful cousin named Esther, whose Hebrew name was Hadassah.  He had raised her as his own daughter, after her father and mother died.”

(Esther 4:14)   KJV  “…and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”  CEV says, “…It could be that you were made queen for a time like this!”

Does this mean that raising children properly is more important to God than just birthing them and letting them raise themselves?  Yes!

Let’s talk about this!  If God places a child in your care, He means for you, the adult, to raise them.  Kids do not raise themselves.  Seek the Lord’s guidance, be confident, pray for wisdom, give them back to the Lord to use in His Kingdom, and then encourage them every step of the way.

David (I Samuel 16:11,12) KJV  “…There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep…Now he was ruddy {of a lively, reddish flesh color}, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look at…Arise, anoint him: for this is he…And the spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward.”   CEV says, “…My youngest son David is out taking care of the sheep…He was a healthy, good-looking boy with a sparkle in his eyes…He’s the one!  …at that moment, the spirit of the Lord took control of David and stayed with him from then on.”

Can even your youngest child allow the Holy Spirit to control his life?  Yes!

Let’s talk about this!  There’s really no other way.  As our friend’s kids are entering their pre-teen and teen years, I’m starting to hear stories of problems and issues between the parents and the kids, or issues of drugs, etc.  The world is too enticing to a child, to be controlled by anything else beside the Holy Spirit.  Nothing else can guide them into all truth.

Are there examples of “unruly” kids in the Bible?  Plenty!  Many “did evil in the sight of the Lord.”  But, we’re here to talk about our kids, and to see that they don’t grow up hurting and broken.  Both our natural kids, and those God has placed in our care.

Raising a child with no faith is just cruel.  What can we do to raise balanced children…those who are less likely to hold onto hurts, and then to continue carrying those hurts into becoming broken adults?

Pray for a good sense of humor!  You’ll need it!

Widen your circle of influence over as many kids as you can…with care and love.

Be real with them!  Be sincere!  Pour out your life, pour out your passion. Pour your love of Christ out on them.

Show a genuine interest in what they’re interested in.  Ask, “What’s up with you?”  “What’s going on in your life?”  “So, how ya been?”  Get into their lives.

Extend your compassion to all kids, not just your own.  Encourage them, lift them up, and lighten their load.  Direct them.  Point them to Jesus!

Here’s an Acrostic Poem to help you remember:  LEAD, BY POINTING TO JESUS

L ift them up

E ncourage them

A ccept them, and then give advice

D irect their focus to the Lord and to spiritual things

Be there for them and be their advocate (Over the years, I have volunteered my son for so many things, he’s begging me to stop!!)

Y es!  (This is your answer whenever possible, or give an alternative)

P ray, pray, pray!

O bey the Lord’s plan for THEM (You have to ask God to reveal this to you!)

I nvestigate Godly options with them

N ever give up trying to connect with them

T rain them (Like with a puppy…over and over and over again!) and teach them God’s ways

I nitiate conversation, so they can talk about themselves and their relationship to the Lord

N o!  (Say this whenever needed and mean it, or don’t say it!!)

G o wherever necessary to follow God’s plans for this child

T alk about anything with them, in a matter-of-fact way

O ffer assistance, then step back and let them try it themselves

J oin in their fun

E njoy them!

S erve the Lord gladly, then show them how it’s done

U nderstand their hurts

S implify their lives, make it easy for them to find God (If something’s not an option, don’t give them a choice)

So, what’s God’s vision?  To encourage and inspire kids, teens, and young adults to be all God wants them to be in His Kingdom.  To encourage the church to give them the tools needed to equip them to overflow with God’s love.  To use their Holy Spirit overflow to help others meet the One who can fix all hurts and areas of brokenness.  There’s no limit to what God will do to see His Kingdom grow!  Parents and church, we need to prepare them to reach out with their faith to help others.  Please encourage each other, sometimes we’re guilty of not seeing our own potential!  If God shows you potential in someone, tell them, so God’s plan can be fulfilled.  So, we can see clearly…“What’s Up With Those Kids!”

Take time to ask yourself what YOUR passion is.  If you don’t know, ask the Lord to reveal it to you.  Then be patient and obey each step He shows you.  If you’re one of those broken adults (or you’re praying with and helping someone who’s broken), and the brokenness is from past hurts as a child, let’s pray that the Lord will finally heal those areas once and for all, through the Power of His Holy Spirit.   That way, we won’t need to revisit those hurts again and you can be free to pursue the passion the Lord’s given you.

My Mom’s Story…

“The Universe is made up of stories not atoms.” By Muriel Rukeyser, American Poet

Here is my interview with my Mother, Tina Julia, who passed away on July 12, 2011, at the age of 90 years old.   For her 90th Birthday Party, I made a beautiful scrapbook of memories, & included this interview!  She was named after an Italian saint that her mother prayed to (Findera, in Italian).  She has no middle name.   Julia is the confirmation name she chose for herself.

My Mom was not quite 5 feet tall, and she had osteoporosis.   Two and a half years ago, she fractured her back just from sitting up in bed!  She used a walker, because she had tripped on the carpet at Royal Palm Retirement Center where she lived, and was unsteady.

She learned to use the sewing machine at a young age and worked in a sewing factory.  She was the youngest in her large family, and her Mother had pleurisy, which is the inflammation of the lining of the lungs and chest that leads to chest pain when you take a breath or cough, so my Mom had to quit school after the fifth grade to take care of her.  She loved school, and would have benefited from a complete education.

The accomplishments she was most proud of were giving birth to her four children.  My oldest brother was born while my Dad was in the US Army…my brother was 3 years old when my Dad came home.  My brother and my Mom lived with my Dad’s Mother until my Dad came home after World War II.  My brother was six years old when I was born.  My younger brother was born a year and a half later, and my sister was born ten years later, when my Mom was 39 years old.  My Mom raised my brother for three years without my Dad.  Not only did she have to grow up fast, but she, also had to adjust to living with my Grandmother (my Dad’s Mom), who was from Italy and did not speak English very well.

When I asked her what she would have done differently, she asked, “What?  Not get married?”  Obviously, that’s what people did back then!!  She and my Dad met when she was thirteen years old.  She and her Mother started going to the church my Dad and his family started in their house.

She always wanted children, so she was happy with raising the four of us.  However, she would have liked to go to beauty school.  She would have had time to go to beauty school after work, before she married, but her mother didn’t have money for that.  Her family was very poor, but probably everyone else was, also, at that time.  There was never enough money to do anything like go to beauty school.  My Mom and Dad married in 1942, when they were 21, because my Mom’s parents died within days of each other.  Her Mother died, because she was sick and in the hospital, and her Father died because he got hit by a car going to see her in the hospital.

In the early days of her marriage to my Dad, she says learning to cook was a challenge, because her Mother was an excellent cook.  My Mom was a pretty good cook, but she raves about her Mother’s Italian cooking!  Raising four kids was also a challenge!  My older brother was a challenge, because he was three years old already, when my Dad came home from the war, so he was spoiled by my Mom and my Dad’s Mother!  My younger brother and I were only a year and a half apart in age, and my Dad always said, that’s when my Mom went crazy, so basically that’s how I knew her!  Ten years later, she decided she wanted one more child before she was 40.  My sister kept her young.  Basically, I prayed for a little sister, instead of those two brothers, and God heard my prayer!  but, as my mother told me, “Your father never changed a diaper!”  Two infants nearly the same age was a lot for my Mom.

The fun things she loved were:  School, singing, and playing basketball as a teenager.  When she was older, she loved walking everywhere, instead of taking the bus to and from work, and later in life she loved taking all her children on picnics to the park.  In many ways, my Mom was like a fifth grader, because that’s all the formal schooling she was able to get.  I’ve taught fifth grade and love fifth graders, so I know my Mom thinks of things in terms of an exuberant fifth grader at times.  Or a pouty one!  I listened many, many times to what she told me about the ladies who sat at her table at Royal Palm Retirement Center…fifth graders!!  But, she made a great Mom!  She’d do all her cleaning at night when we were in bed, then pack a lunch, and off we’d go to a day at the park!  I believe her “school” was life.

Her biggest challenge was taking care of her family.  My Mom’s life was her family, her job was her house.  She changed curtains every season, she took Venetian blinds down and washed them in the bathtub, she had plastic on our couches!  You could literally eat off her floor.  Ironing was done on Mondays, after the clothes were sprayed with starch, and she was the best iron-er I know!  At this time, our family was living in suburban NJ, and though not affluent, our family was more affluent than hers was as a child.

She had good health to take care of her family back then.  She saw things were different as she got older…the cost of living was more expensive, and she couldn’t do as much physically as before, because on some days she just didn’t feel well.

My Mom had a rough childhood, because her Dad was very strict, and her Mom was very sickly.  she was the baby in the family.  During some of her childhood, she had to go an orphanage, until her older brother and sisters were old enough to take care of her.  I believe this is why she never seemed to get really attached to anything or anyone.

Right after we moved down here to FL, from NJ, when she was 81 years old, she was diagnosed with colon cancer.  She had surgery, and as a preventive measure, she started chemotherapy.  After one chemo session, she got very sick, got pneumonia, was put in ICU, and was “Ready to go to her Lord,” she told me.  I had prayed all the way to the hospital, “I trust you, Lord, I trust you, Lord” and saw her, in my mind’s eye, resting in His hands.  When I got to the ICU, I saw angels around her bed, and asked her, “What if the Lord wants to heal you, then you’d want to live, right?”  “Yes,” she assured me.  My son was only in seventh grade at that time, and I’m thankful that God chose to heal her.  She lived well past the five year mark, and the colon cancer never came back.  She was  particularly grateful for church to learn about God, and knowing that God always watched out for her.  Back when she was real young, she knew some people didn’t believe in God.  But, she told me, she would say to them, “Yes, there is a God.  Read the Bible and see!”

My Mom is very feisty, and we call her the “little bull dog,” because she’s opinionated and tenacious.  If she has an idea to do something or go somewhere, we better do it or else!  “Or else” means she’ll keep talking about it, until we comply.

My Dad passed away at 74, and my Mom did not know how to even balance a checkbook, or use a calculator!  This was a tough adjustment time for my Mom.

My Mom answered a lot of my interview questions with, “I don’t remember!”  So, when I asked her what she thought of this interview, she said, “As you get older, you forget things!”

The most significant events for her in her last year were:  Her oldest grandson visiting from Texas with his wife and children; Her trip to the beach at Longboat Key for two nights with me and my son Casey; Turning 90 years old and having a big 90th Birthday Party with my family, my sister, my brother & his wife, my cousin & her husband, & Skyping other family members in NJ.  The photos from that 90th Birthday party are hanging on my wall.  I look at them every time I walk by them, because she’s smiling like a little girl, and that makes me happy!  And I can remember so much love!!

My Mom passed away a year ago now, on July 12, 2011 at the age of 90 years old…For her big 90th Birthday Party, on April 8th, 2011, I wrote this to honor her & celebrate my memories…

MOM, I REMEMBER…

Mom, I remember…When we were little, you got up early to finish all your chores, & pack us a lunch, so you could walk us to the park, & let us stay there all day!!

Mom, I remember…How upset you got when your kids were hurting!

Mom, I remember…How you called me “Renee-a,”  “Renee Joyce,” or “Miss Primrose,” depending on how much trouble I was in!

Mom, I remember…When you’d get us on the bus to Newark, tell everyone who’d listen, all our business, take me to Grayson’s Clothing Store, buy me clothes we couldn’t afford, & say, “Don’t tell Daddy!!”

Mom, I remember…When you told me, “Wear jeans (or dungarees, as you called them!) all week, if you want, but on Sundays, God wants us to dress nice!!”

Mom, I remember…How you told us that you were never embarrassed to take us to someone’s home…thanks for teaching us not to touch things that don’t belong to us!

Mom, I remember…How you told us to never forget about God, & how you got us ready on Sat. night, to be ready for Sunday School & Church each week…I know it wasn’t always easy waking up 4 kids/teens early in the morning!!  I do remember, though that getting the baloney curls in my hair, hurt…a lot!

Mom, I remember…When you told me, “Keep your house clean, if you don’t do it, who will???”

Mom, I remember… When you told me you were praying for me to have a baby girl, but loved your grandson Casey all the same when he was born!

Mom, I remember…When Casey had bad temper tantrums, you told me, “None of my kids ever had them!!”  …Right!

Mom, I remember…How you & Casey were always on the same “wave-length,” &  you would play all day long together!!

Mom, I remember…When my teachers would tell you how quiet I was in school, & you’d say, “Well, she’s not quiet at home!”  Now, I say that about you!  When people tell me how sweet my little, teeny, tiny Mom is…I tell them, “Are you kidding, she’s a little bulldog!”

Mom, I remember…This little plaque you gave me a long time ago…that still makes me cry,

“FOR MY DAUGHTER”

So many times I looked at you

And saw me standing there.

I kind of smiled to myself…

Which really wasn’t fair.

To keep from you this feeling

How proud I am of you-

May all your dreams become

Fulfilled-as mine once

Did with you.

Thanks for being a great Mom…I love you, Mommy!

All God’s Blessings on your 90th Birthday!!

Love, Renee

“But to keep this thing from spreading, we will warn them never again to speak to anyone about the name of Jesus.”  So they called the two apostles back in and told them that they must never, for any reason, teach anything about the name of Jesus.  Peter and John answered, “Do you think God wants us to obey you or to obey him?  We cannot keep quiet about what we have seen and heard.”  Acts 4: 17-20 CEV

Do you know someone with an infectious smile or a contagious laugh?

The very first date I ever had with my husband, George, was to see the movie, “It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.”  My date laughed and laughed so loud and so hard at every scene in the entire movie that pretty soon I was just laughing because he was laughing.  Laughing with him.  It was contagious!!

One of my friends from NJ has a contagious laugh, (well, more like a cackle!) which you can hear all the way down the hallway! You start laughing even before you see her because that laugh is just downright contagious!

But then there are those things that infect or contaminate you and stay with you long after you can tolerate them.  Like one of my school principal’s cologne.  I could smell his nauseating (sorry!) aroma as soon as he stepped out of his office and came toward my classroom.  It was an early warning sign for, “You-better-look-busy-when-I-come-around-the-corner!!”

Or, how about the Jerry Seinfeld episode where the “stink” gets in his car and gets on everything and on everybody.  No one can get rid of it…it literally attaches itself to everything!!

If you’ve ever actually had an infection or a contagious disease, you know how people just stay clear of you!  Especially in hospitals! Wow, are they paranoid about germs or what?  When I was a child, maybe 10 or so, I had ingrown toenails that got infected and had to be removed.  Ouch!  Well, my little roommate and I decided to play cards together on my bed and we were happily playing, when the head nurse walked in to check on us.  She completely flipped out.  My infected toe was draining and oozing (sorry, again!) and would contaminate the other little girl, who was there to get her tonsils out.  She quickly separated us, changed the sheets, and made us vow to remain completely apart for the duration of our stay.  What a bummer!!  I guess she felt I was seriously contagious.

What is the definition of contagious?  “Caught or communicated by contact, infectious, easily diffused from person to person, capable of infecting.  To pour out and spread, to circulate, to proclaim.  To widely spread.”  The easiest way to catch most infectious diseases is by coming in contact with someone who has one, such as, person-to-person, or mother to unborn child.

But, Church, when we talk about the Gospel, we’re not spreading a disease…we’re spreading a cure!  Spreading positive instead of negative, spreading encouragement instead of discouragement, spreading joy instead of sadness, spreading hope instead of hopelessness.  The easiest way to spread the Gospel is to communicate it.  Catch it yourself and spread it around.  Circulate it.  Pour it out.  Proclaim it!

Listen to the words of a song by the Newsboys.  “I’m Not Ashamed” from the album “GOING PUBLIC,” copyright 1992.  “I’m not ashamed to let you know, I want the light in me to show.  I’m not ashamed to speak the name of Jesus Christ.  What are we sneaking around for?  Who are we trying to please?  Shrugging off sin, apologizing like we’re spreading some kind of disease.  I’m saying, “No way!  No way!”  This one says it’s a lost cause, save your testimonies for church time. The other one states you better wait until you do a little market research.  I’m saying, “No way!  No way!”  I’m not ashamed to let you know, I want this light in me to show.  I’m not ashamed to speak the name of Jesus Christ.”

Powerful words.  Right?

Church, are we doing this?  Or, are we sick and spreading a disease?  Is our joy, or our stench, contagious?  Are we too shy or too intimidated to spread the glorious Gospel?  Do we fear rejection too much to infect the world with God’s story of love?  Are we sorry that we have to share the truth with others? Are we sneaking around, afraid we’ll offend?

Your opinion, your knowledge of God matters.  Your opinion, led by the Holy Spirit makes a huge difference in this world.  It’s a Spirit thing!  It’s what empowers Christians to be contagious, so that the tiny germ, or seed, has power to grow and spread.  It’s how you look at life through the Holy Spirit that’s contagious.

What separates you from those who are merely “good” people doing “good” things? They don’t possess the Spirit of God that empowers us with the boldness to evangelize His world.  You’ve obeyed God by receiving His Truth and by being led by His Holy Spirit.  You’re willing to be constantly corrected and renewed.  You’re willing to be pushed beyond your human capabilities to where God’s strength kicks in.

Listen to the words of one more song by the Newsboys.  “Spirit Thing” from the same album, “GOING PUBLIC,” copyright 1994.  “It’s not a family trait, it’s nothing that I ate, and it didn’t come from skating with holy rollers.  It’s an early warning sign, it keeps my life in line, but it’s so hard to define.  Never mind, it’s just a spirit thing, it’s just a holy nudge, it’s like a circuit judge in the brain.  It’s just a spirit thing, it’s here to guard my heart, it’s just a little hard to explain.  It pushes when I quit, it smells out counterfeit.  Sometimes it works a bit like a teleprompter.  When it’s teleprompting you, I pray you’ll let it through, and I’ll help you with the how, but for now, it’s just a spirit thing.  It’s just a holy nudge; it’s like a circuit judge in the brain.  It’s just a spirit thing, it’s here to guard my heart, it’s just a little hard to explain.”

Says it all, doesn’t it?

It’s your sensitivity to that holy nudge, that circuit judge in your brain that makes the difference.  You can hear that early warning sign that keeps your heart in line.  The Holy Spirit helps you smell out counterfeit, it’s that spirit thing that guards your heart.  Don’t try to explain it, just spread it around.

For a germ to get into someone’s blood stream, it can’t be a weak germ, or the body’s healthy immune system will not let it get in.  To get the Gospel spread into the heart of someone who has built up immunity to that still, small voice of the Holy Spirit, you can’t be a weak Christian.  Some people in the world have sanitized themselves from the Gospel.  They’ve used anti-infectious walls to contain what they think of as the contamination of the Gospel.

Church, you need to be contagious.  Spread it around, because then the world can see Jesus through you.  Yes, people need to find Jesus for themselves, but by being a contagious Christian, you can show them where He lives.  Point the way.  Start the germ of belief; plant the seed of hope.  Tell them it’s okay to trust Him.  If they’re hungry, they’ll find Him.  It doesn’t always mean they’ll agree to come to your church.  But, that they may want to become a part of His Church, the family of God.  Teach them, by your life, that it’s okay to believe in prayer, in truth, in right and wrong, and in integrity.  If He lives in your heart, let people look in there and see Him.  Show them by your everyday lifestyle, not just your Sunday best.

Spread your germs…the seeds of the Gospel.  Get it into their bloodstream where it can really do its work.  Jesus’ blood covers us.  Let it flow.  Something that’s infectious changes us.  Be infectious.  Keep growing ‘til you’ve become a full-blown infection, a liberating contamination.  You’re spreading the Good News, not a disease.  Jesus offers people freedom from the disease of sin.  He’s the way to wellness.  Be so contagious that you spread it by just being in the same room with someone.  Where it will just float in the air and be inhaled by someone.  You can spread our contagious Gospel everywhere, all the time, even when you don’t see a “sick” person.  Don’t try to be a contagious Christian with unclean hands, or you’ll be prime target for satan’s contamination.  Be a healthy Christian who’s as infectious as a smile and as contagious as a laugh.

As all germs are different, so all Christians can be contagious in different ways.  Use what God gave you to invade the world’s defenses.  Max Lucado explains in his book “Cure for the Common Life” (W Publishing Group, 2005) that God packs our bag with all the tools we need to serve Him.  Max says, “God did not drop you into the world utterly defenseless and empty-handed.  You arrived fully equipped.”  So, use the unique tools, talents, and passions God gave you to be contagious in His Kingdom.

Who are the contagious Christians you know?  The ones you go to when you need prayer, or the ones you seek when you need encouragement?  Whose joy of the Lord can you feel just by being in the same room with them?  Where are the “prayed up” Christians around you?  Can you feel that “spirit thing” when they’re around?

To be contagious, get to really know people, so you can find out how satan’s lies have permeated their spirit.  People who don’t know Christ are highly susceptible to satan’s tricks.  They haven’t been exposed yet to the Truth of God’s Word.   They haven’t built up resistance or immunity to satan’s fiery darts.  They have habits that promote the spread of the enemy’s lies; and their hearts are deceived.  That’s how they become contaminated.

The Bible says, in II Corinthians 4:3-10  (CEV), “If there is anything hidden about our message, it is hidden only to someone who is lost.  The God who rules this world has blinded the minds of unbelievers.  They cannot see the light, which is the good news about our glorious Christ, who shows what God is like.  We are not preaching about ourselves.  Our message is that Jesus Christ is Lord.  He also sent us to be your servants.  The Scriptures say, ‘God commanded the light to shine in the dark.’  Now God is shining in our hearts to let you know that His glory is seen in Jesus Christ.  We are like clay jars in which this treasure is stored.  The real power comes from God and not from us.  We often suffer, but we are never crushed.  Even when we don’t now what to do, we never give up.  In times of trouble, God is with us, and when we are knocked down, we get up again.”

Church, shine with Jesus’ light, and then let your light become contagious.  We all need to work together to spread God’s Word.  Obey God.  Speak about Jesus now, so others can find Him now.  It’s imperative that we do it now, while there’s time left.   We cannot keep quiet about what we’ve seen and heard.  Spread God’s story of love. Manifest the Gospel.  Church, the Body of Christ should be a contagious force in this world.  Let God shine in your hearts to let the world know that His glory is seen in Jesus Christ.

Don’t wait until you think you’re perfect to be contagious, we’re like clay jars (maybe even cracked clay jars!) in which this treasure is stored.  Every time you encourage a child to read the Bible and trust in the Lord, every time you pray for a need, believing God will answer, every time you rejoice in the Spirit even in a crisis, you’re being contagious and spreading God’s Word.  You’re sharing yourself, your passion and your faith for the glory of God.  Do it!

The Director of Vacation Bible School at my church in NJ, taught me many things.  I was new to the Christian walk and I was hungry to find out how to live it.  Just in passing during one of our conversations about VBS, she commented that our meeting would need to be after her morning devotions because she spent that time with the Lord.  I’d never heard about devotions and thought, “Yes, I need to do that, too!”  I could see how that kept her in tune with God.

How contagious she was without even trying!  Perhaps she didn’t even realize she was being infectious.  Maybe you won’t know either.  Do it anyway!  Be contagious from your overflow.  Spread God’s love because you’ve received it abundantly.  He’s infected you with joy unspeakable.  You’ve received much more than you’ll ever need.  Give it away.

Let’s not keep this thing from spreading.

Gracious Heavenly Father, You’ve infected us with your joy.  And it’s our joy to honor you.  Thank you for all your blessings.  Help us share your love wherever we go.  Make us bold, contagious Christians in your Kingdom with your message of hope.  Fill us to overflowing with the gift of your Holy Spirit, so we can be your servants to a lost world.  We’ll never stop proclaiming the name of Jesus.  In Jesus Name we pray.  Amen

I’m Just A Guest Here

Image“Hold thy peace at the presence of the Lord God: for the day of the Lord is at hand: for the Lord hath prepared a sacrifice, he hath bid his guests.”  Zephaniah 1:7  KJV

“So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.”  Matthew 22:10  KJV

Many of you have traveled, taken vacations, stayed in hotels, gone on a cruise, slept on trains, roamed the country in your RVs, and been away from your home for extended periods of time over the years.  But, I think the most difficult thing is to be an overnight guest in someone else’s house!

Feelings and concerns come up because we’re the outsider in another’s territory and domain.  We’re living in someone else’s world.  In another’s space.

Just recently, I hopped on a plane in Florida by myself to visit with my sister in New York City for a week.  Though I’m originally from New Jersey, so I’ve only spent day trips in the City over the years.

Everything I experienced on this trip was technically new to me.  When I compared the two locations, nothing was the same.  Nothing!

House in Florida vs. Co-op in the City.  Palm trees, golf courses, and blue water vs. tall buildings, small cafés, and beautiful architecture.  Sunshine vs. rain.  Quiet single-family homes  vs. crowded city streets.  Driving vs. riding taxis, subways, and buses.  Early birds vs. night owls.  Peaceful silence vs. hectic, lively clamor.  Lush landscapes, beautiful horizons, and awesome sunsets vs. Broadway’s glittering lights, the harbor’s spectacular skyline, and the City’s cultural aspects.  A different world.   Different sounds, different flavors, different noises, different feelings.

When we’re guests, everything we do takes longer.  We don’t know where anything is and we don’t know the routine of the house.  We’re not self-assured, because we’re off our schedule, even if it’s a laid-back one.  We can’t find a thing, because nothing’s in its usual place.  We carried some of our essential shampoo and bathroom stuff with us, but we have no room to lay it out properly; or time to organize it.

We don’t live here; we’re just visiting, so we don’t feel completely comfortable.  We seem to tiptoe around trying to accommodate others and their schedules.  While we can have a wonderful time, we don’t know our way around, so we need constant assistance.  It’s disorienting and frustrating.

The majority of our belongings are at home…often we only have our traveling gear with us.  It’s sufficient for the trip, but we long to have all our treasures.  But those things are back home.

Since it’s not our home, we don’t have any of our normal responsibilities or chores.  We try to help, but we don’t know how things work; we don’t know where things go, or where anything is located.  We’re afraid we’ll mess up something, or break something.  Perhaps we’ll let the family dog out when he’s supposed to stay in, or let the kitty cat in when she’s supposed to be out.   We’d rather just leave the chores to the homeowner…we’ll be going back to our own home shortly anyway.  It’s annoying to both of us to have to keep asking about everything.

Sometimes, we’re afraid to venture out of the house.  Often, we don’t understand the language, or the subtle nuances of this place we’re visiting, so communication is very difficult.  We look at the architecture, scenery, and people, in a new way, which is different from the way our host views them.  We’ll hear sounds, smell fragrances, and see sights they don’t notice anymore.  On the other hand, we don’t always see pitfalls, hazards, or things to avoid that a resident or local would see quickly.  Traffic patterns, road signs, rules, and regulations may all be drastically new to us.  We may react too slowly; or we may overreact.  We’re naive…we’re unaccustomed to the area.

It would take longer than our visit to become used to our surroundings.  We’re not living here, so we depend on the one who invited us for wisdom.  To show us the ropes.  Give us a crash course in living at their house, in their neighborhood, in their city, their state, their country, their world.

When we’re visiting, we have lots of downtime on our hands.  So our host or hostess has planned all sorts of fun stuff for us to do, like tourists.  Though we bond with new people and we’re willing to try new things; often, we feel compelled to tell them things like:  “At my house, we eat at 5pm”, or “When I’m home, I go to bed at 10 pm.”  Or, “I’ve never eaten Sushi before!”   We feel we should justify ourselves, as if we’re only doing these unusual things because we’re visiting…we’re not at home!

We tend to eat improperly and develop stomach issues, because we’re “away!!”  We don’t usually follow our exercise routine either, whether we’re on vacation or on a business trip, we’re away from home!  Our stay here can be exhausting…we’re weary, but we can’t stop, we might miss something!  We’re only here for a short time, so we’ve got to keep going to get in all the sights.

At each new sight, we’re thrilled and amazed with what we see, but cautious at the same time.  It’s all different and thrilling, but we’re not sure we could “live with it!”  Perhaps it’s too quiet, or too loud; too much activity, or too little.  Too unlike home.  We like it here, but we’re not sure we’d want to live here.  It’s not our home!  We may purchase a few souvenirs, (we want our memories) but we’re lonely for our “stuff,” our house, our neighborhood, our city, our state, our country, our world.

And especially, our loved ones.  Our way of doing things.  Our pace.  Our lifestyle.  This stuff and this place were created for our host.  We want to go back to the place that was created for us by us.  Our hearts are there.

When the visit is over, we can’t wait to get home!!

Church, this is how we’ll feel when our visit to Earth is over!  It was great, but our home is in Heaven.  This world is not our home…we’re guests here.  It feels strange, we feel like foreigners.  We’re just traveling through.  Like nomads.  “Our bodies are like tents that we live in here on earth.  But when these tents are destroyed, we know that God will give each of us a place to live.  These homes will not be buildings that someone has made, but they are in heaven and will last forever.  While we are here on earth, we sigh because we want to live in that heavenly home.” (2 Cor. 5:1 &2, CEV)

Church, are you sighing?  Are you waiting?  Are you cherishing our blessed hope?  Are you ready?  Are those around you ready, too?

The Message words it this way “…When the time comes we’ll be plenty ready to exchange exile for homecoming.”  2 Cor. 5

Since this world is not our home.  We’re uncomfortable here.

John 17:15 & 16  (CEV) says,  “Father, I don’t ask you to take my followers out of this world, but keep them safe from the evil one.  They don’t belong to this world…”

We’re outsiders in another’s territory and domain. It would take longer than our stay on Earth was meant to be, for us to become used to our surroundings.  We must depend on Jesus for wisdom, since He has overcome the world.   We must keep asking Him to show us around.  We’re dependent on His direction.  Without Him, we’re lost in a strange place.  It’s okay for us to ask, because we’re just guests.  We aren’t expected to know our way around this place.

“Don’t love the world or anything that belongs to the world.  If you love the world, you cannot love the Father.”    1 John 2:15  (CEV)

The Scripture says in 1 Tim. 6:7 (CEV), “We didn’t bring anything into this world, and we won’t take anything with us when we leave.”  No souvenirs.  Nothing lasts forever here.  God’s prepared a place for us.  Heaven is a better place.  We’ll see Jesus there.  We long to go home.  The home He created for us.

1 Peter 2:11  (CEV) says, “Dear friends, you are foreigners and strangers on this earth.  So I beg you not to surrender to these desires that fight against you.”

1 Cor. 29:15 says,  “We are only foreigners living here on earth for a while, just as our ancestors were.  And we will soon be gone, like a shadow that suddenly disappears.”   In Lev. 25:23  (CEV) God says, “…It all belongs to me—it isn’t your land and you only live there for a little while.”

Psalm 39:12 (CEV) says, “Listen, Lord, to my prayer!  My eyes are flooded with tears, as I pray to you.  I am merely a stranger visiting in your home as my ancestor’s did.”  Psalms 119:19 (CEV) says, “ I live here as a stranger.  Don’t keep me from knowing your commands.”

The Bible teaches in Hebrews 11:13-16 (CEV), “Every one of those people died.  But they still had faith, even though they had not received what they had been promised.  They were glad just to see these things from far away, and they agreed that they were only strangers and foreigners on this earth.  When people talk this way, it is clear that they are looking for a place to call their own.  If they had been talking about the land where they had once lived, they could have gone back at any time.  But they were looking forward to a better home in heaven.  That’s why God wasn’t ashamed for them to call him their God.  He even built a city for them.”

God’s built us a city.

John 17:25 (CEV) says,  “Good Father, the people of this world don’t know you…”

1 John 5:4 in the Message says, “Every God-begotten person conquers the world’s ways.  The conquering power that brings the world to its knees is our faith.  The person who wins over the world’s ways is simply the one who believes Jesus is the Son of God.”

“On this earth, we don’t have a city that lasts forever, but we are waiting for such a city.”   Hebrews 13:14 (CEV)

We desire Heaven while walking on this earth, because our hearts are there.  We’ve laid up treasure there.  Too many earthly treasures here will weigh us down.  We’ve packed up eternal treasures and sent them to our new home in Heaven, so only our traveling clothes are needed for now.  In a little while, God will call us home, until then, our tents are good enough.

Rise above the earth.   Come up, live higher.   We’re kings and priests; meant to live in the spiritual realm.  Bring another guest with you to the wedding feast.  Go out and compel them to come in.  See the world from God’s perspective:  We’re the outsiders in someone else’s territory and domain.  As C.S. Lewis put it, Christians on the earth live in “enemy occupied territory.”  Mere Christianity (New York:  Macmillan, 1943), 36.

In New York City, I got homesick for the sunshine.  As Christians, we get homesick for the Son, too.  Anxious to get home.

While we’re here, we must tell others about the Heavenly home waiting for us.  We must make sure others are going home with us.  Don’t get too comfortable here, we’re only guests.

Get A Life

Standard

Image“For we are laborers together with God:  ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.”  I Corinthians 3:9   KJV

Have you ever heard anyone say, “Get a life!” or “I wish they would get a life!”?  We’ve all heard it, but hopefully, it hasn’t been said about us.   Perhaps we’ve even said it to someone ourselves (or we’ve at least wanted to say it!).  Because some people seem so preoccupied with themselves and minor details of their lives, they don’t seem to see the whole picture (or anything that’s going on around them!).

The problem with telling someone to “Get a life!” is that it’s too general.

To “get a life” you have to first, “build a life!”

Brick upon brick, stone upon stone, block upon block.  To get a life, build a life.  To have a home (a safe relationship with your family), build a house (a safe place for your family to dwell).

Hurricanes prove the need for a sure foundation.  The Bible tells us in I Cor. 3:10 & 11  KJV,  “According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon.  But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.  For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”  This is what builds a fortress around your family.

Be a wise master builder; and know that Jesus is the ultimate Master-Builder of your life.  He is the sure foundation.  He is the One who helps you weather the storms of life.

There’s a construction site near where I live and I take my walks past the activity to see what’s going on…what progress has been made each day.  Construction has been going on for about 2 years now.  The 90, or so, villas take up an entire block, with the backyards facing each other on two different streets.  They’re built so that two villas are attached, like they’re holding hands.  Their backyards are protected because they face each other and their garage is facing the street.  The front doors are on the outer sides of each villa, so that the front door faces the neighbor that the villa is not attached to, like they’re greeting their next-door neighbor.  I really like them; each villa is a slightly different color with roof tiles that co-ordinate nicely.

I’ve watched this construction job site for so long, that I’ve seen completion of a majority of the homes, while others are still just being started.  It’s like an assembly line of houses.  My Dad was a carpenter, so it’s exciting for me to watch.  Someone had a vision, land was purchased, plans were drawn up, and permits were obtained.  The area was surveyed, the big machinery came in, measurements were taken, the ground was staked out, and dirt was pushed around.

Crews came in, footings were poured, cement walls went up, roofs went on, and rooms were divided by studs and dry wall.  Painters came on board and painted inside and out, roof tiles were put on in the blazing hot Florida sun!  Kitchen cabinets and appliances arrived; carpets or tile floors were laid down.  Landscapers turned the dry dirt into a tropical green oasis.  Sprinklers water the greenery.

At one point in construction, it looked as if the piles of debris would take over.  Win out.  Choke the life out of the plan to build, but the master builder came and had a plan for the garbage removal…and it was never seen again.

Soon families started moving into the completed villas.  I saw moving trucks unloading furniture and boxes…and garages filled with stuff.   Cars and vans were parked in the driveways, babies were wheeled in their carriages, and dogs were walked. Deliverymen came and went, and folks sat in their garages trying to catch a breeze.  I smelled the aroma of steaks grilling on the BBQs in the backyards.  I heard cell phones ringing, people talking, and music playing.

Life!

All this while the site across the street was still a barren wasteland waiting for its life to be built.

All the folks seem so happy here, but they couldn’t live here, if they didn’t build here.  If it was still barren.  If there wasn’t a plan.  A house doesn’t just materialize.  Neither does a life.  There’s got to be a plan.  And in order for there to be a plan, there must be a planner.  A Master-Builder.  A house needs some forethought, so does a life.  Don’t just expect it to happen, it has to be planned.

We have to plan for it.

Are you waiting for your life to be built?  Do you know someone who needs to “Get a life!”?  A house needs a Master-Builder, so do we.

How do you build a life?

     1.  Contact the Master-Builder.  He has the vision for your life.  He purchased the land.  He’s drawn up the plans.  He’s gotten the permits.  He’s surveyed the area.  He’s taken the measurements.  He’s ready to bring in the big machinery.  He’s staked out the ground and He’s moving the dirt.

He’s got the right crew to pour the footings and build the cement walls for a sure foundation.  He’s constructing the dividing walls, painting the house, and putting the roof over your head to protect you and your family from the hot sun and severe weather.  God carts away the garbage and debris in our lives, never to be seen again.  Ask Him to dispose of it for you, don’t let it surround you, or stay piled up on your property.  It’s ugly; and not part of the beautiful landscape He has planned for your life.  He’s got everything you need inside and out, all around you, and under your feet.  He’s even planned for the landscape around you to be lush and green!  He waters your life with His Living Waters.  Read His book.  Discover His plan for you.

2.  Gain the support of others.  Build so that your backyards face each other for protection, hold hands as you go through life.  Greet your neighbors, look out for each other, a hurricane or crisis will show you how much you need them.  Protect your family.  Pray.  Ask Jesus to place a hedge of protection around your home and your family.  Let your garage door face out to the world, embrace your neighborhood, catch the cool breeze of the Holy Spirit as you sit and look at the world through His eyes.  Building a house is hard work, so is building a life.  Don’t leave the Master Plan to an amateur.  Call in the professional…Jesus  Accept His advice on how to build your life.  Work at it.  It’s time-consuming, but ah-h-h, the sweet satisfaction of a job well done.  Stand back and look at the finished product that God has built, step by step.

3.  Start now, it’s not too late, even if your land seems barren, the Master-Builder knows what to do.  He knows what you need.  He’s built other lives.  From nothing to an abundant life.  Build your child’s life now, don’t wait.  Start building…brick upon brick, stone upon stone, and block upon block.  And see them come alive with the Master-Builder’s perfect plan for their lives.  Don’t just sit back and let it all just happen to you.  Society is built on the world’s standards.  You want to build an eternal foundation, not something temporary.  The enemy wants the storms of life to cause you to lose your footing, shake your foundation, and tear down your protection.  He wants the garbage and debris to choke you.  Don’t leave the building process in the hands of a demolition crew.  The enemy wants to destroy you and take you down.  Go to the Master-Builder, He’s the One who can build you up.  Give you a life built on the Rock!

Job 22:23  CEV  “If you return to the Almighty, you will be built up.”

Beach Blessings-Reclaim

Standard

Image“In that day the Lord will reach out his hand a second time to reclaim the remnant that is left of his people…” Isaiah 11:11  (The Message)

A few years ago, my husband and I went to our favorite public beach on Gasparilla Island, FL, and we were shocked at what we saw!

In the past, our walk from the parking lot to the water was a relatively short distance.  Usually when we got out of our car, there were cabanas with picnic tables, and once we got on the beach and looked to our right, we saw a big shade tree, huge rocks, and boulders in front of beautiful beachfront properties.  Beyond the huge rocks, was a short beach, and an inlet where mounds of beautiful shells were stacked on the shore.  When we walked to our left, the beach stretched quite a ways, until we got to a bulkhead in front of a little yellow hotel.

But, now, when we got out of our car, we saw that the beach was twice as wide, from the parking lot to the water, as it had been back in the past.  The sand was completely mowed down, debris was buried, and big tire track marks could be seen in the sand.  Heavy machinery and equipment had been used to position a huge pipeline right across the middle of the beach, to dredge sand from the Gulf of Mexico back onto the beach. The waves were the same, but we saw a monstrous barge far out in the water working to reclaim sand and fulfill its mission to enlarge the beach.

Sand that had been lost in storms and hurricanes was reclaimed, taken back, retrieved to make a wider beach.  Also, wide bridges of sand were formed over the pipeline in several areas for us to gain access to the water.  The new beach space was so expansive…it made the horizon looked immense.  However, the trek to the water from the parking lot, now took us much longer.  And we had to carry our heavy baggage and beach “stuff” such a long way, we were exhausted.  It took extra effort just to get to the water.  Also, now we were farther from the shade and the picnic tables, under the cabanas.

We love shelling, but no one was shelling.  We saw many more tiny broken shells and fewer big ones, because there were no nooks and crannies for shells to get caught up in.  The beach was completely smooth and flat, no large mounds of beautiful shells, and no rocks or boulders.  The beautiful beach houses looked a lot less private, since they were now easily seen from the beach.  But, with no trees, shrubs, or sea oats to block the view from the houses to the water, the homeowners also, now had great, unobstructed views of the Gulf.  The beach seemed to go on for miles, we could see all the way down the shoreline in both directions, giving us a clear view.

Everyone seemed shocked when they first arrived at the beach…it’s a BIG change.  The pipeline lying across the beach divides the people into shade worshippers and sun worshippers.  The pipeline itself was old and rusty; it obstructed our view of the water until we climbed over it via the sandy bridges.  It was ugly and unsightly.  With “KEEP OFF” warning signs scribbled on it…it looked like a wall of graffiti in a NY subway station.

But, the larger beach did attract more people!

People were exploring everywhere. Up and down the beach, over by the big machinery, on the sand bridges over the pipeline.  It was so new and different, that it was exciting.  Everyone wanted to check it all out.  The sand bridges attracted many children, also, because great mounds of sand had been formed to climb up on, and slide down.  Which they did, over and over!

What a great day in the sun!!  To enjoy the wonderful, cool, and refreshing water, everyone embraced the “newness“ of the scenery, and ignored the “unsightliness” of the essential, but ugly pipeline.  The pleasures of a day at the beach far outweighed the hassles involved with being there while all this reclaiming was going on.

Church, we have a mission, too!  We need to periodically “reclaim” what’s lost in our lives.  We need to see our lost opportunities, and the lost souls around us.  We can’t just sit back and watch from a distance.  We don’t go to the beach to sit in the parking lot.  We don’t enjoy the Christian “walk” by being a spectator.  Sometimes this world is hard to live in when all this “reclaiming of the lost” is going on, but I assure you, seeing your loved ones refreshed at the water’s edge, instead of drying up on the beach, is worth all the hassles involved in helping to get them there.  Let’s ask the Lord to mow down the debris in our lives, and in others we know, so there are fewer obstacles in our paths.

Find out what obstructs their view of the water.  What obstructs their view of Jesus?

Let’s scrape away the surface, dig a little deeper, move the heavy rocks away (even it takes big machinery), and desire to walk a little farther down the beach.  When our view is clear, and we’re determined to touch the water, we can show others how to get to the water’s cool, refreshing presence.  Jesus has provided the essential pipeline to reclaiming that which has been lost.  He has built the bridge to His refreshing “Living Waters.”  Show others that the way over the ugly pipeline is over the bridge He has provided.  There they’ll find the refreshing water they need.

The way is straight.

The Bible says in Psalms 5:8,  “Lead me. O Lord, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make thy way straight before thy face.”   KJV

Relax, come out from your shady hiding place, and soak up the sun.  Be “SON” worshippers!  Be refreshed in the wave of the Holy Spirit.  But, protect yourself from the harmful rays of the burning sun.  When you’re at the beach, wear sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, sandals, beach shoes, a cover-up, and bring a beach umbrella.  When you’re determined to splash in the Living Waters, protect yourself from the fiery darts of the enemy…pray, put on the helmet of salvation, the breastplate of righteousness, the belt of truth, the shield of faith, the shoes of peace, and bring the sword of the Spirit.

Dive into the refreshing water and be cleansed.  The waves are calm, but while the barge works to reclaim lost sand, Jesus is working to reclaim lost souls.  The barge is rusty, noisy, and intrusive, but its work needs to be done.  Reclaim what the elements have taken…reclaim what the enemy has taken.  Don’t let the lost climb up to the bridge only to slip back down.  Work hard by the power of the Holy Spirit as your heavy equipment.  It’s necessary.  Step out of the calm, peaceful atmosphere of your church to the job of reclaiming lost souls and lost life opportunities.  Keep the beach you already have, but add to it.  Disciple those in your care.  Teach them to reach out, too.  So they can be used in God’s Kingdom to reclaim what’s lost in their lives, and in those around them.  Then get to work, all day, every day, reaching, reclaiming. Touching lives for the Kingdom of God.  “GO!”

Pray for anointing.  Walk farther down the beach.  Lots of obstacles will try to get in our way.  Allow the Holy Spirit to mow them down.  Make a greater effort.  We can’t think about just feeding ourselves.  Christians, we need to carry more supplies.  Be full, so you have enough to give others.  Don’t let the “KEEP OFF” attitude of the lost souls deter you.  Pray, because we need more anointing, more compassion, more love, more mercy, more strength, more peace, and more discernment.  We need reinforcements.  Pray for a harvest of workers with similar passions.  Kids, teens, adults, committed to bringing the message of Christ to their town, country, world.  The Lord’s making the beach larger in this world and it’s attracting more needy and lost souls to His Kingdom.  The hurting are exploring…be ready to direct them to Jesus.  And, (Amen!), it’s attracting children who’ve been brought up without faith.  But, now they’re searching for what they’re missing.  Reclaim them, don’t let them die on the beach…they’re so close to the water!!  Help them see the water in the distance and go for it.  Pick up people along the way and bring them with you.  What’s to stop you?  What else do you need?  The Lord has flattened out the area for you and made it fertile ground.  He’s placed a bridge.  You can see clearly now what needs to be done.  The path to the refreshing water is just over the bridge.  Climb up. Sometimes its hard work, but don’t let others slide back down. The sand is hard to walk on.  Sometimes it seems like you’re not making much headway.  But, walk on.  There’s no retreating, just reclaiming.  The pipeline is not made to send the sand back out to sea; the barge only knows to reclaim it from the sea bottom through the pipeline back to the beach.  It doesn’t go in reverse.

Romp, play, enjoy the sun and fun, but keep your eyes on the horizon where Jesus is.  Stay focused.  Boats may go speeding by, planes may fly above, they’re going too fast to stop, but you’re on the beach with the lost souls, reclaiming them for Jesus.  Don’t wear blinders on the beach.  Don’t let anyone carry heavy burdens alone.  Point to Jesus who can carry all our burdens.  Don’t let people drop in the hot sand.  Pick them up, don’t worry about any dirt or sand on them, Jesus can wash that away.  Then, lead them to the bridge, over the pipeline, to the water’s edge.  The sand is hot without something to protect your feet.  The sun is bright and blinding without sunglasses.  Equip them, as you’ve been equipped.  Reclaim and disciple.  Give them the umbrella of protection you’ve found. There’s enough room for everyone under the umbrella of the Holy Spirit.  There’s enough Jesus to spread around.  Give freely.  Jesus will cover them with His blood and give them His white robe of righteousness.  Don’t let them bake in the sun and dry up in the heat.  The enemy will pick at them like vultures.  Birds hover overhead just waiting for something to die.  Be determined that it won’t happen to anyone you come in contact with.

Spontaneous people go to the beach ill equipped without the necessary supplies for themselves, let alone anyone else.  Plan and be prepared with what you need for the trip today.  Each day put on your Christian armor; the whole armor of God.  Then, bring gear from your overflow to share with the ill equipped.  You need to be ready to reclaim the beach, or the sand will be lost forever and the beach will be gone. Reclaim the lost. Just as the sand gets all over you, and it’s messy…sometimes the mess from the lives of others gets all over you, but the water washes it away.  You’re at the beach, you’ll see people fishing:  Go fishing.  You’ll see people shelling:  Go shelling.  You’ll see people exploring:  Go explore.  What’s your passion?  There’s a ministry opportunity just waiting for you.

The water is the place of refuge for that lost soul.  And Jesus’ cool, cleansing water is what changes your lost opportunities into new and exciting dreams.

Did you bring enough towels?  Give away your extras.   Then wrap the lost in the loving arms of our Savior.

Stand In The Rain

Standard

Ephesians 6: 10-20   “Be strong in the Lord,  (who?) And in the power of His might. (whose might??)   Put on the whole armor of God, that you might be able to stand (do what?!?) against the wiles of the devil…put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand (to what?!) in the evil day, and having done all, (done how much?) To stand (to what?)…stand therefore …(why?) That I may speak boldly (speak how?)…”  (*please note!  The questions are mine!)

Listen to the song “Stand In The Rain” by Superchick…it inspired this message!

Sometimes it’s difficult to stand, because life pushes us down!!  Because sometimes…it rains.  Can’t we all name those situations in our own lives over the years when it rained in our life?  We can all click them off pretty quickly…the situations that make it seem impossible to stand.

I hesitate to mention life’s issues, because I don’t want to make light of any one of the situations that can crush us.

But, it’s time to lift our heads up!!

If we close our eyes and try picturing Jesus in front of us.   Barging through our obstacles, stepping into our situations, changing the atmosphere around us, and changing hearts…and then think, “Wow, all I have to do is stand!  Yes, the enemy wants to crush me, but I just need to stand!!”  With Jesus we can stand!  Amen!

We can’t sit.   Lie down.   Or relax.   We have to get up.  Have a backbone.  Be confident.  Stop carrying a burden meant for the Lord.  We need to just go on standing!  “Plod on,” as one of my pastors always said.  Keep on keeping on!

Notice the scripture in Ephesians doesn’t say “attack!”  The scripture doesn’t indicate that we hit people over the head with our “sword.”  We put on our armor to be strong in the Lord. And simply, stand!

Isn’t that interesting?!?  What are we standing for?  When will we move?

We’re waiting for instructions from the general.  Why?  So that we can speak boldly!!  He’ll tell you when to move!  He’ll tell you what to say!  Right now, just stand!!

So simple!  Stand!

Don’t flail around trying to get your enemy’s attention, ranting and raving to everyone.  Remember the scripture about Mary, in Luke 2:19, “… when all they that heard it wondered…Mary kept all these, and pondered them in her heart.”  No ranting and raving, just standing!  Waiting for further instructions!!

What gets God’s attention?

Standing!!!!!  It always gets God’s attention, especially if you continue to stand, even in the rain…even in the trials…even in the tribulations… even in life’s storms.

Yes, stand in the rain!!  Especially, in the rain.

It’s easy to stand on the sunny days.  In sunny Florida, we don’t expect rain…some people pray for it, when our grass is dry & fires are raging, but generally, we Floridians love the sun to shine.    Rain means we have to stand with an umbrella, be prepared not to get wet.  We have to think ahead a little, get our gear on…forget about wearing open-toed shoes, ‘cause we might get stuck in a puddle.  Sometimes it’s a lot of hassle to anticipate rain or stormy weather…and let’s not even talk about hurricanes, tornadoes, & storm shutters!!  Around here, we just think of that as a plan of the enemy!!  And we don’t like to be deterred by the enemy, or get soaked by his lies.  “Don’t let it rain on my parade!” we say.

Often, in Florida, a cloudy, rainy, cooler day is a relief.  A time to recharge.  We don’t let it deter us…we keep going about our business.

Spiritual rain is good;, too…if we get drenched by God’s Holy Spirit, we’re refreshed and ready to fight again.   We can stand our ground, even if it’s muddy!!  Even in the rain we can shine!!  If we get wet, we can wipe ourselves off, and continue to stand.

Don’t collapse in the rain!!  Stand!  To stand means to have both feet planted firmly on the ground…on a strong foundation…dug-in-deep like a palm tree that can withstand storms and high winds.  To stand means if we’re at the water’s edge, and a wave threatens to knock us over, we don’t move, we dig our feet in deep, and stand strong.  And, if the enemy threatens to knock us over, we don’t move either…we dig our feet in deep, and stand strong!

To be able to stand…don’t rest from praying.  Don’t whine.   Don’t complain.  Don’t dwell on the negative.  Surround yourself with God’s people who will lift you up in prayer.

Faith means to stand.  We’re standing on the truth that God is in control.  Don’t bend, don’t waver!   Instead ask:, “What does God say about this situation?”

Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the thoughts that I have toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil to give you an expected end.”

Jeremiah 33:3 says, “Call to me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.”

Here’s a quote by Tommy Tenney in his book, Experiencing God’s Presence.  “Uncertain & unable to move one step more, you are caught in the middle of what is & what can be.  At the end of yourself with nothing but the promise of faith & hope in your heart, you are in a good place.  You may not know whether to laugh or cry, but it doesn’t matter because it is in His hands now.”

We can find God’s will by praying, &andstanding!  Then…keep praying.  And…keep standing.

We pray at the foot of the cross, leave our heavy burdens there, and get in position to stand behind Jesus!

Well, when do we move?

Only when we hear his voice.  Don’t go if He doesn’t say go.  Stand directly behind Jesus, & only go forward at His command.

Why?  Because, people should only see Jesus when we’re moving!!!!

It’s useless to have all our armor on, and then just sit down, fall down, stop, or get pushed down.   Be strong!  Stand…be on guard.  We need to slow down from our busyness, and stand!!  Stop running to & fro to others for advice.  We need to be steadfast, steady, sure, & sure-footed.  Let the Bible be the light to our next step, especially in the rain…where there’s less visibility!

Especially in the rain!

What keeps us standing, when others fall?

To stand, to withstand, or to take a stand, means we’re reliable.  God can trust us to stand!

Stand eye-ball to eye-ball with God.  Then, at the foot of the cross, stand, and see Jesus.  That’s why we can stand, because from this position, we can imitate who we see.  Jesus!

If  left alone, we’ll fall.  With Him, we stand.  With others who also stand, we’re encouraged to stand and keep standing!  Amen!

Let’s stand…and then break out into a song, if we wish, because we didn’t think we could stand, but we did!  We rely on each other to stand, especially when it’s raining buckets on us!

Name names!  Who comes to your mind when you think of someone who stands, and encourages you to stand, too?  Fill in the blanks.

_______ I depend on you to stand in the rain!!

_______I depend on you to stand in the rain, too!

Tell everyone that comes to your mind, “Thank you, I know it isn’t always easy to stand in the rain.  But, I appreciate you…I need you to stand, and I need you to continue encouraging me to stand, also!”

How many times over the years have we gotten bossed around by the enemy?  And how many times have we had to take a stand against the wiles of the enemy!  Amen!

Take a stand and say to the enemy, “No, you won’t take my health!”  “No, you won’t control my finances!”  “No, you can’t have my children!”  “No, you won’t destroy my family!”  “No, you can’t steal my life!”

We all need everyone to stand.  We respect those who stand…we’re inspired by others who stand.  We love those who stand!  We need to stand, even in the rain, so we can teach our children & grandchildren, friends & family, to stand, also.

Where are we standing?  We’re standing united behind Jesus!!  Then, we can position ourselves to go with him to reach others.

God showed me the whole picture:  First, look to God!   Second, repent & leave all burdens at the foot of the cross!    Third, receive forgiveness!  Fourth, imitate the one you see-Jesus!  Fifth, put on your armour!  Sixth, stand behind Jesus!  Then, Jesus will fight your battles with the enemy!  Stay behind your commander-Jesus, to reach others!  Then, teach them to stand!  Encourage them to keep standing with you!  That’s how you make disciples!  Amen!

Standing is the right position to be in!!!  There’s no running or denying Christ!!  We’re standing…because we’re done wrestling with God!!!!!!   Nothing’s about us, it’s all about Jesus.  We can come out of the “gloomy-day” shadows.  We can let Jesus into all our life’s situations, to shed His light on our issues.  To brace us up, help us stand, and keep us standing!  Like a palm tree is braced in readiness for a storm!!  “The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree!!”  Amen!

Only God dares to stand on the edge of the canyon of our lives, so we can stand without fear!

Is it hard to see through the pouring rain?

Yes, it causes discouragement, weariness… it clouds issues.  We need some sunshine. We need God’s “Son” to shine!  To stand in the light of Christ who saved us.   We were going under, we couldn’t stand any longer, but God’s arms reached us just in the nick of time!!

It’s important to know…God does the doing, we do the standing, but not on a pedestal, we’ll fall for sure, but on the solid ground of the Word of God, and His promises.

“But,” we may say, “Many of my prayers our serious prayers.”

“Yes,” God says, “Stand!!!”

My prayers are serious prayers, and maybe yours are, too!  But I’m standing!  And while I’m standing…I’m praying, loving, caring, and encouraging those I’m praying for.  I’m asking others to intercede with me, lifting their names constantly before the lord, and still standing, not cracking under the weight of their issues.

Remember…our issue is to stand!!  God’s issue is to take care of their issues.  We can be like Mary, Mother of Jesus…and hide these things in our hearts!

Many times in our lives, when we’ve chosen to stand…we can’t even begin to explain how we did it!!!  By all rights, we should have gone under.  But somehow, some way, we stood!!  We felt like dead-weight, buckling under.  It was a miracle, as we felt God pick us up, breathe life back into us, and put us into a standing position again!!

When we stand, we’re already in our armor.  Put on the armor, and then don’t sit down…just stand!!  Be on guard, suited up, and ready for instructions.  Don’t run from the enemy…fight him with the strength of God.

Look around you, and tell me…out of all the blessed people you meet, if you knew their entire life history, that you would say they had it easy!!  It’s not easy for any of us, but God’s supporting us…every time we think we’ll fall with the next hurricane-sized attack from the enemy, God picks us up again, and we find ourselves standing, in the rain, and in the storm!!

And singing in the rain, too!!  It’s amazing!!

What about those without the armor?

That’s where we can really stand, and stand out.  To reach out.  That’s who we need to be focused on.  Stand, because they’re watching us…wondering how it is that we can stand in the “rainy-stormy” situations that would destroy them.   Teach them the song we sing in the rain!  The new song that Jesus taught us…teach them how to “stand in the rain.”

How can the enemy defeat a united front of standing, spirit-filled believers with Christ in the lead???  Stand together.  Be that united front.  We’ve got our battle clothes on.  We’re in our battle stance.  Firm and unmoving ‘til our Lord gives the battle cry!  Stand, because victory is imminent!  Don’t break formation!  Not even to bend down to tie your shoelace!!

Don’t bend or sway at all…just stand!   We’ll see, when we’re in the correct position that Jesus will be in His divine position, leading us.   He’s right there in front of us!!  Where He’s so easy to see clearly, even if it’s raining!!

We should teach others to stand, but not to lean on us…this is very important!!  Here’s their position.  Standing & relying on God, not on us.  Let’s create a mighty force.  We will stand!!  By the grace of God!

Here’s a recent example in my life:  When my cousin was diagnosed with stage 1 uterine cancer, God said, “I am not afraid.”  That means:  Battle clothes on, feed on His Word, and stand with Jesus, ready for Him to fight the battle.  Amen!!  His will, will be accomplished!

So what did my cousin do?  She stood!  And is cancer free today!

We can’t accept defeat.   We’re told to stand!!  Another powerful lesson for me, when a close friend  was so sick, I physically felt her pain, and that had never happened to me before.  I just could not accept that a mother with two young children would be left helpless & hopeless, because the enemy decided her family was doing too much for the Lord!  I just couldn’t stand for that!!  That’s when we pray & stand the tallest, when we just can’t accept the attack of the devil, lying down!!  We get up, we get in his face, and we stand!!  For Jesus, and with Jesus!

We can’t fall for satan’s lies, & his tricks.  So, we must stand!!

We need to surround ourselves with others that know how to stand.  Not with those sleeping on their watch or collapsing with fatigue.  That’s why we worship and fellowship with believers.  It lifts us up.   Straightens us out.   Encourages us to get in an upright position in Jesus.

Learn to show someone else how to stand.  Be determined.  Don’t be like a stubborn child who refuses to stand when their parents tell them to…we all know what a temper tantrum looks like!

Don’t crumble, you’ll bring everyone else down.

Even when it gets breezy at times…when strong winds pick up in your life.  Stand firm.   Don’t get blown over.  Don’t lean to one side.  Stare straight ahead…that’s where Jesus is.  The people next to us, and around us are counting on us to stand.  It’s important!!  We’re an army, God’s army!!  We’re after complete victory!! Amen!

Sometimes we ask,  “Lord, what am I doing?  I’m not getting anywhere!!”  “But,” He says, “Look, it’s raining, and you’re still standing!”  Amen!!
